The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has announced that it will begin the strict enforcement of the National Vehicle Homologation and Conformity Assessment Programme from October 1, 2026, to ensure all vehicles imported, assembled or manufactured in Ghana meet national safety, quality and environmental standards.
In a public notice issued on Monday, August 3, the Authority said the programme has been in operation since 2020, but stricter enforcement of the applicable national vehicle standards, including Ghana Standard 4510 (GS 4510) for the importation of used vehicles, will take effect from October.
According to the GSA, the move is aimed at protecting consumers from unsafe, substandard and environmentally harmful vehicles while promoting a safer, cleaner and more regulated automotive industry.
Under the new enforcement measures, all new vehicle manufacturers and assemblers, as well as used vehicle importers, distributors and dealers, must register with the GSA.
The Authority also said all new vehicle models must be homologated, while used vehicles must comply with the applicable Ghana Standards before they are shipped to Ghana.
It warned that vehicles that fail to meet the required standards will not be permitted entry into the country upon arrival.
The GSA, however, clarified that the directive does not amount to a ban on the importation of used vehicles.
Instead, it urged importers and other stakeholders to familiarise themselves with the requirements and ensure compliance before importing vehicles into Ghana.
