Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta has announced that there will be no increase in the Value Added Tax (VAT) as suggested.

The Finance Minister made the announcement while presenting the 2018 mid-year Budget review to Parliament, on Thursday, July 19.

According to the Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta, the fact that government has not been able to collect taxes does not necessarily mean increasing taxes will be a solution for high revenue.

The revelation from Ken Ofori Atta, today July 19, 2018, in parliament, downplays a comment made by a Special aide to President Akufo-Addo and leading member of New Patriotic Party Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko that government will increase taxes to raise more revenue.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, July 12, 2018, the former Director of Think Tank Danquah Institute wrote “will you support a VAT increase to keep your lights on, your secondary schools filled, your school kids fed, your streets clean, your streets safe, young graduates employed, and decent, affordable homes built for working families?.”

However, speaking on the floor of Parliament as he presented the 2018 Budget review, Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta stated that as a measure to accrue more revenue for the government of Ghana, "We are intensifying tax compliance measures to make sure we collect the taxes due us"

Ken Ofori Atta also disclosed that the government will soon roll out major initiatives to address tax compliance challenges.

He continued by saying "Tax compliance will be increased by implementing a common platform for telecom revenue monitoring"
