Ghanaians and other foreign nationals residing in the United Kingdom (UK) illegally will from January next year -2018, have their bank accounts frozen.

The development follows a new directive by the UK Government to all banks in the country in a bid to fish-out on illegal immigrants.

The British government under Prime Minister Theresa May’s plans to use this measure in actualizing its goal of creating a “hostile environment” for illegal immigrants in Britain.

Speaking to the media on the issue, banking consultant - Nana Otuo Acheampong warns UK-based Ghanaians who fall in the category to close or transfer their accounts immediately.

In his own words, “to be fore warned is to be for armed now you’ve got until January, If you know that you do not have legal basis to be there then the best thing is to either close the account now or transfer it out to ensure that by January there nothing, in their account because they are going to freeze their accounts”.

He added that the UK government will give the foreign nationals (including Ghanaians) the opportunity to come and justify why they have the accounts and once one is able to prove his/herself, then they will unfreeze it.

“…..Oh yes the savings will revert to the treasury just as it will in Ghana, you know we have a similar thing but on different grounds, so it will revert to the treasury so whenever you go back and you can prove your entitlement then they will give it to you so they are not trying to steal people’s money buy just to let the law work,” he said.
