The choice of burial place for the late popular Ghanaian musician, Daasebre Gyamenah, is mired in controversy, as a strong disagreement emerges between the paternal and maternal families.
The royal Ofulna Abrode family of Anomabo Ndasimam in the Central Region, where her mother belongs, wants his remains to be buried in Anomabo and not Koforidua, something, the other side does not support.
Such is the entrenched position of the mother’s family that, they have threatened to litigate in the court to scupper plans to lay the body to rest in Koforidua. Â
Speaking to journalists after an inconclusive meeting in Koforidua, the spokesman of the Abrode family, Nana Kwaku Appah, said they were only insisting that the traditional practice among the Akans was respected and upheld.
It was also important to recognize that the deceased had been nominated for installation as the Abakumahene of the Anomabo Traditional Area, when the unexpected happened, he added.
He said that made it reasonable to send the body to his people for fitting traditional burial.
Mr. Owusu Boakye, the deceased’s paternal uncle, however, holds a different view, and argues that since the deceased had lived almost his entire life in Koforidua, it is only proper, he is buried there.
Daasebre Gyamerah was also the grandson of the Omanhene of New Juaben and that made him a royal of the paramount stool.
He expressed surprise at the sudden shift in position by the maternal family, especially having agreed on the establishment of a funeral committee.
