The police service is mourning two of its personnel killed by gun-wielding robbers at Zuarangu, the capital of Bolgatanga East District in the Upper East Region.

Police said the incident happened on Wednesday, December 15, 2021.

Police have also announced a GHS 50,000 reward for anyone who volunteers information leading to the arrest of the armed robbers.

Eyewitnesses told police that at about 7:45 pm, the two robbers, who had just finished robbing a popular provision shop known as ‘Baba Store’ at Zuarungu market square opened fire on the police officers on patrol duties on their (robbers) way out.

The officers had stopped at a food vendor to buy food opposite the mini-supermarket.

The bullet hit the petrol tank of the motorbike that the police were riding and it caught fire, burning the two officers to death in the process.

The bodies of the two officers have been conveyed to the Bolgatanga Hospital morgue by a team of police who immediately rushed to the scene.

Police have described the incident as “Black Wednesday.”

Police have said they will contact the bereaved families to inform them of the development before any other details will be made public.

Police have also appealed to members of the public who witnessed the dastardly act to be circumspect with making information public.
