3 Police Officers arrested for helping prisoners escape

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested three police officers for their role in the escape of two convicted prisoners. The convicts are the children of two of the arrested police officers.

Chief Inspector Kennedy Kwame Nyantey with the Twedie Police station and Inspector William Armah with the Regional Visibility Unit bribed Sergeant Kyei Mensah with GH¢10, 000 to free their sons who had been convicted by the Kumasi Circuit Court for armed robbery.

 

Emmanuel Kwame Nyantey, 33 son of C/Insptr Kennedy Nyanteh and Frederick Asante, 26, son of Insptr William Armah were on October 12, 2017 sentenced to a total of 21 years in hard labour for robbery and were supposed to be sent to the Kumasi Central Prison to start their sentence.

 

However, the convicts were never sent to the prison to start their term.

 

Confirming the arrest, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Commissioner of Police (COP) Ken Yeboah, said police picked up intelligence that the two convicts were never sent to the prison to start their term.

 

He said subsequent investigation revealed that the investigator in charge of the case, Sgt Mensah collected money from the parents of the convicts to free them.

 

According to him, when the investigator was interrogated, he admitted that the parents of the convicts influenced him with an amount of GH¢10, 000 to free the convicts and mentioned their names to the police.

 

Mr Yeboah said following up on that, the police invited the parents who also admitted to have paid the money to the investigator to release the convicts.

 

The Regional Commander said so far, Emmanuel Kwame Nyanteh, has been rearrested while the police are on the heels of the other, Frederick Asante, who is currently on the run.

 

 

He said a team has been constituted to delve into all convicted cases to establish whether or not all convicts “are taken to prison after they have been convicted by the courts.”

 

He asked the public to remain calm and support the service through volunteering of relevant information.

 

“The command will not in any way protect any officer or group of officers who will involve themselves in any action that will tarnish the image of the service,” he stated.
