At least nine people have been reported dead at Asawase, a suburb of Kumasi in a stampede during the celebration of Eid-Ul-Fitr on Wednesday which traveled into Thursday.

As part of the celebrations to mark the end of their 30 days of fasting, an event was organised at the Asawase Community Center with a reported 200 to 300 people in attendance.

Six of the dead are females and three males while those injured were receiving treatment at the Manhyia hospital with one person said to be in a critical condition.

It is not yet clear what caused the stampede but a survivor says, a fight broke out and those inside the Center were in a hurry to get out.

There are conflicting reports as to what happened prior to the stampede but one survivor, Charles Amoa-Boateng says, there was a sudden power cut inside the club which caused panic and a rush for the exit.

He said, there was a lot of people wailing and crying in the fight to get out.

"I was bitten by several people in my fight to get out. Some people were stepping on me while others were throwing their hands for help to get out," he said, according to myjoyonline.
