Chinese Galamsey woman, Asia Huang, and four other Chinese nationals standing trial for flouting a ban on illegal small scale mining, have again been remanded into prison custody to reappear on the 23rd of May.

This followed a request by the prosecutor to an Accra High Court presided over by, Mr Justice Charles Ekow Baiden, for an adjournment, to give her more time to study dockets received from the Ghana immigration service.

Asia Huang and the four were arrested in one of her mines at Obuasi after a tense standoff with immigration officers.

She is allegedly a galamsey kingpin who secured her release from three previous arrests, by threatening to release sex tapes of her amorous encounters with top officials and security capos.

Defence lawyer Jerry Akwetey’s prayer to the court to grant his clients bail was denied after the Chief State Attorney, Mercy Arthur, strongly opposed the application for bail.

Meanwhile, State Attorneys are reported to be preparing to charge the five under the Minerals and Mining Act 2006, (Act 703). This follows complaints by pressure group OccupyGhana that charges levelled against them were in relation to immigration offences, and not their involvement in illegal mining activities.
