Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia, has filed a writ against the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP over accusations that he was engaged in illegal mining activities.

Baba Jamal filed the writ last Friday but has yet to verify whether Bernard Antwi Boasiako aka 'Chairman Wontumi' had been served.

According to the former MP, though he hails from an area rife with illegal mining activities and knows a lot about the business, he had never practised illegal small scale mining. He therefore found Mr Antwi Boasiako's allegations injurious to his reputation.

Among the reliefs he is seeking is two million cedis as compensation for his “tarnished reputation” and an order for the respondent to retract his allegations and render an unqualified apology.

Speaking on Asempa FM's Ekosii Sen on Tuesday, Mr Jamal said that, having had the privilege of working in all the three arms of government and knowing the law on small scale mining, he would not involve himself in any illegality. The suit is therefore meant to nib such rumours in the bud.

"I've been a deputy minister, a parliamentarian and a practising lawyer which means I've studied law, made laws and implemented same so why would I turn around to flout them as it is being alleged", he explained.
