The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has announced a major shift in its operational posture in Bawku and surrounding areas, transitioning from peacekeeping to peace enforcement operations, following a directive from President John Dramani Mahama.

This new approach, aimed at curbing growing insecurity in the region, is in response to persistent violence, repeated attacks, and rising casualties attributed to the activities of armed elements.

The GAF says the shift has become necessary due to threats posed not only to Bawku but to national peace and security at large.

In a press release signed by Captain (GN) V.A. Arhin, Acting Director of Public Relations, the Armed Forces emphasized that the peace enforcement posture will be more assertive. Military operations will involve robust patrols and heightened engagement across Bawku, Binduri, Nalerigu, Zebilla, and other vulnerable areas.

“The Military will undertake robust and purposeful operations with all the necessary force required to prevent and respond to threats from armed persons,” the statement read. It also warned that all individuals in affected communities must adhere to security directives and curfews, with violations being dealt with according to the law.

The Ghana Armed Forces reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and restoring order, especially in areas where recent attacks have raised national concern. Residents have been advised to cooperate fully with security personnel and report suspicious activity.

“The Ghana Armed Forces remains fully committed and in readiness to execute its constitutional mandate to ensure that the country is peaceful and its citizens are safe,” the statement concluded.

This move follows recent escalations in Bawku and nearby communities.
