The ongoing strike by lecturers at Ghana’s public universities will not be halted by an injunction secured by the National Labour Commission, says their umbrella association.

On Friday, August 6, the National Labour Commission secured an injunction against the strike in an Accra High Court seeking to compel the lecturers to return to work while negotiations continued.

However, the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has said 13 member institutions have resolved that the strike should continue.

“The consensus is that the withdrawal of teaching and related activities must continue until the government puts some enhanced and progressive proposals on the table. The call is also for us to remain focused, united and resolute in our quest to ensure that government initiates and implements appropriate measures to improve our Conditions of Service,” UTAG National Secretary, Dr K.K. Abavare.

The statement also indicated that the decision to continue the strike follows a stall in negotiations with the government on their Conditions of Service which culminated in their declaration of the nationwide withdrawal of teaching and related activities.

Meanwhile, the strike by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) is biting hard as two major public universities suspend end semester exams.

The University of Ghana and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have all suspended final exams due to the disruptions to the academic calendar caused by the UTAG strike.

At the University of Ghana, the Business and Executive Committee of the institution postponed all final exams of Level 100 and Level 400 students of the University.

In a communique signed by the Registrar of the School, Emelia Agyei-Mensah, the public university indicated that the resumption of the Level 200 and Level 300 batches for the second semester has also been adjourned.

“The University remains open for now, and academic activities will resume when services are restored”, the statement added.

At KNUST, school authorities say they have suspended the end of second-semester exams.

The school said the examinations originally scheduled to start August and end on August 20, have been suspended temporarily until further notice.

The statement added that a new date for the examinations would be released at the appropriate time.

UTAG began the indefinite strike on Monday, August 2, 2021.
