Boat disaster claims 9 lives on Volta Lake

At least nine people have died while two others remain missing following a boat accident on the Volta Lake in the East Gonja District of the Savannah Region.

The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, between Sikakope and Mataiko along the Yeji–Congo route.

The boat, which was carrying 14 passengers, reportedly capsized due to bad weather conditions.

According to reports, seven bodies, comprising two women and five children have so far been recovered, while five male passengers were rescued.

Rescue teams are continuing search operations for two missing persons, believed to be a woman and a child.

Preliminary findings indicate that none of the passengers were wearing life jackets at the time of the accident, raising concerns about safety compliance on inland water transport
