A group of boys are raising funds to buy sanitary pads for less privileged girls at Somnyamekodur D/A Basic School in the Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira district of the Central Region.

The boys, aged between 9-13 years, are part of a boy’s only boot camp organised by Junior Shapers Africa (JSA), a non-governmental organisation focused on grooming and mentoring boys to become responsible men in future.

The boys, who are from various schools across the country, in an interview with Graphic Online, expressed their joy in helping underprivileged girls stay in school during their menstrual period.

13-year old Melorwo Muzzu told Graphic Online that girls at the Somnyamekodur D/A Basic School are unable to afford sanitary pads and have been absenting themselves from school due to this.

“We are doing this because we have sisters who go through menstruation…and so we are doing this to help the girls who cannot go to school because of this [menstruation] and to cancel the concept that for a guy, touching a pad is a taboo,” he said.
