The Ministry of Roads and Highways has reopened the Buipe and Yapei bridges in the Northern Region to vehicular traffic.

The two bridges were closed down to motorists last month for repair works.

This resulted in congestion at the Yeji ferry station as most commuters resorted to travelling across the Volta Lake by ferries.

The inadequacy of ferries led to most passengers getting stranded at the ferry station.

This led to widespread criticism of the Ministry of Roads and Highways as well as the Ghana Highway Authority, especially for the timing of the repair works.

Parliament even summoned the sector minister, Kwasi Amoako Atta, for questioning.

But a statement issued by the Minister on Friday said though the bridges will be opened, only vehicles not exceeding the allowable load limit will be allowed to travel across the amenity.

“Vehicles approaching the bridges will be weighed at the Jema Weigh Station near Kintampo and the Yapei Mobile weigh van before allowed on the bridges.”

The Ministry assured the public that traffic will be managed to ensure the safety of the motorists.

“Motorists travelling to and from the Northern Sector of Ghana are therefore advised to adhere to directional and safety signs that will be placed in appropriate sections.”
