The President has urged Muslims in the country to resist fundamentalist ideas that seek to use religion to perpetrate selfish, destructive and violent agenda.

Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo says in as much as religion is functional and help us cope with the uncertainties of life, it is a double edged sword that can be invoked for destructive purposes.

All Ghanaian Muslims, whether from the Ahmadiyya, Sunnie, Shia or Tijaniyya sect should therefore join forces to reject idealism that seeks to take advantage of the religion for destructive purposes.

Speaking during a ceremony at the Black Star Square to mark the end of the Muslim Holy month of Ramadan, the President reminded Muslims of the words of unity and peaceful co-existence as captured in the Quran; "And hold fast all together by the ropes which Allah stretches out to you and be not divided among yourselves and remember with gratitude Allah’s favour on you."

The comments come in the wake of increasing Islamic fundamentalism in the Middle East and other parts of the world. Terrorist groups such as the so- called Islamic State, Boko Haram and Al-Qaida have in the name of the religion killed hundreds of people in the most gruesome ways.

He is confident such groups and ideologies would not find a way to penetrate Islam in Ghana, if the various sects resolve to come together to sustain the ideals of peace, unity and tranquility
