Eight killed, five injured in Kormantse road crash

Eight people have died and five others injured in a road crash at Kormantse near Saltpond in the Central Region.

The accident involved a Mercedes-Benz and a Hino truck on the Accra–Cape Coast highway.

According to the Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, DOIII Abdul Wasiu Hudu, the Mankessim fire rescue team was dispatched to respond to the accident at around 3:50 am at Kormantse on the Mankessim–Cape Coast stretch of the Accra–Cape Coast highway.

Mr Hudu said some of the occupants managed to come out of the vehicle safely, while others were rescued by passers-by before the arrival of the fire rescue team.

He said the team extricated two people trapped in the vehicle, who were deceased.

Mr Hudu added that the road had since been cleared and opened to traffic with the help of other stakeholders.

He indicated that the cause of the accident is under investigation by the Ghana Police Service.
