The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced a temporary postponement of the planned evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa following the recent wave of xenophobic attacks.
In a press release issued on May 21, 2026, the Ministry said more than 800 Ghanaians have registered with Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria seeking evacuation.
According to the statement, the evacuation, which was expected to begin on Thursday, has been deferred for a few days due to legal and logistical requirements in South Africa.
The Ministry explained that mandatory passenger screening, coordination among institutions, and flight permit arrangements must first be completed before the exercise can proceed.
It added that Ghanaian and South African authorities are working together to improve pre-evacuation processes to speed up the operation.
The government assured Ghanaians in South Africa that efforts are ongoing to ensure their safe return home and thanked them for their patience and understanding.
