President Akufo-Addo has described as a huge success the work of Operation Vanguard in the fight against galamsey in the country.

According to him, despite some few challenges faced by the joint Police and Military taskforce, the fight has so far been successful.

The operation of the task force has led to the arrest and prosecution of some illegal miners which have served as deterrent to others to refrain from the unlawful act.

Land degradation and pollution of water bodies have been the major problems caused by the activities of illegal mining.

Rivers such as Pra, Ankobra, Birim are among polluted water bodies but they are not clearing and returning to their natural state after the nationwide campaign against galamsey.

Speaking at the commissioning of a secretariat for the inter-ministerial committee on illegal mining in Accra, President Akufo-Addo said the work of the committee in the fight against illicit mining will help the country in the coming days achieve sustainable mining with sound environmental practices.

He further called for optimal coordination between stakeholders to help fight the menace.
