Former Chairman of the Ghana- Togo border demarcation commission, Sam Okudzeto says Ghana must consider an urgent discussion with Togo to re-demarcate its territories.

He explains the commission mandated to deal with the Ghana-Cote d'Ivoire border demarcation did not complete its work just like his(Ghana-Togo Border Commission) and there could be dispute if Ghana does not begin engaging with its neighbours to fix their boundary issues.

Sam Okudzeto emphasized in a radio interview, "The demarcation between Ghana and Togo must also be considered just as that of Ghana and Ivory Coast. If it is left hanging, another confusion will develop in the future, as there have been some suggestions about the discovery of oil in the Volta region".

The International Tribunal for the law of the sea(ITLOS) will give its verdict on the maritime dispute between Ghana and Ivory Coast, Saturday, 23rd September.

Both countries want a declaration with each unwilling to make a concession. Ghana is asking the chamber that Ivory Coast has for decades agreed that the area in dispute belongs to Ghana and as such the issue should be settled.

"Ghana respectfully requests the special chamber to adjudge and declare that Ghana and Cote Divoire have mutually recognized, agreed and applied an equidistance maritime boundary in the territory," said Ghanaian agent Gloria Akufo."

The Ivorian delegation, however, sees Ghana's assertion strange claiming the exploitation in the area is an affront to the rights of its people.

" To declare that the activities undertaken unilaterally by Ghana in the Ivorian maritime area comes to shoot a violation of the exclusive sovereign rights of the nation over its continental shelf", said leader of the Ivorian delegation, Adama Kamara.

He further suggests the two nations involved must engage in negotiations and reach an agreement on reparations due Cote D'ivoire.

Judge Boualem Bouguetaia, the President of the Special Chamber together with Rüdiger Wolfrum, Germany, and Jin-Hyun Paik, the Republic of Korea as well as Ad-hoc judges Thomas Mensah, Ghana, and Ronny Abraham, France, were selected by Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire, respectively, to deal with the dispute and produce a verdict on Saturday, 23rd September.
