The Government of Ghana has announced plans to evacuate Emmanuel Asamoah, a Ghanaian national, who was recently subjected to a xenophobic attack in South Africa by a vigilante group.
Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, confirmed that the government will fully fund Asamoah’s relocation and resettlement to ensure his safety after the viral attack.
According to the Minister, he has spoken directly with Mr. Asamoah, who is currently safe but continues to face threats.
“We are taking him out of South Africa,” Ablakwa stated.
He also commended the South African government for its response to the situation, particularly a statement issued by the Minister for Police, Professor Firoz Cachalia, condemning xenophobic violence and promising action.
Ablakwa reiterated Ghana’s commitment to protecting its citizens both at home and abroad.
“We shall continue to make the protection of Ghanaians home and abroad our utmost priority. No Ghanaian will be abandoned in harm’s way,” he said.
The move comes amid rising concerns over xenophobic incidents in South Africa, which have sparked diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
