The Government of Ghana has fully paid all outstanding arrears of the Capitation Grant for basic schools from 2023 to date, according to the Ghana Education Service.

The Capitation Grant, a critical source of financial support for basic schools, enables the purchase of essential teaching and learning materials, funding for minor repairs, and other operational needs.

GES says the timely disbursement of the grant will help school heads manage institutions more effectively and ensure smooth delivery of quality education.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, GES praised the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance for prioritising the payment of the arrears, especially in the face of economic challenges.

“We commend all heads of basic schools for their patience and continued dedication in ensuring uninterrupted teaching and learning, regardless of the delays,” the statement read.

GES also urged school authorities s to use the funds responsibly and in strict accordance with established guidelines for the Capitation Grant.

Monitoring teams across the country will intensify oversight to ensure the funds are properly managed and deliver value for money.

“The government’s commitment to settling these arrears reflects a strong resolve to support the basic education sector and improve school management nationwide,” said Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations at GES.
