Flagbearer of the People's National Convention(PNC) has rejected calls from party executives to step down from his new ambassadorial position.

President Nana Akufo-Addo on Monday swore into office twenty two ambassadors to represent Ghana in various countries of the world. Dr Edward Mahama was appointed ambassador at-large.

Unlike an ambassador-in-residence who is usually limited to a country or embassy, the ambassador-at-large is entrusted to operate in several usually neighboring countries, a region or sometimes hold a seat in an international organization like the United Nations.

The PNC flagbearer was one of 21 appointees present to swear and sign the oaths of office.

General Secretary of the PNC,  Atik Muhammed in an interview said the party was not informed about the appointment by flagbearer Dr Edward Mahama or the NPP government, prior to the acceptance of the position by Dr Mahama.

He questioned why the flagbearer would take such an important decision without recourse to the leadership of the party, considering the fact that he [Dr Mahama] in times past referred offers of appointment to the party for consideration.

National Chairman of the party, Bernard Mornah has also joined the fray, asking Dr Mahama to step down because the appointment would conflict with his position in the party.has asked the flagbearer in the 2016 elections to decline the offer as it would conflict with his position as flag bearer of the party.

Responding to the issue, Dr. Mahama said he is very clear that he has been appointed as Ambassador of Ghana and not for a party. He contends its about serving the interest of Ghana and not the New Patriotic Party.

"I will do what ever I am asked to do for the glory of God and satisfaction of the Ghanaian people,"he stated emphatically.

"This is an honour from the President of Ghana and would not refuse such offer in this particular context. I am serving Ghana and this is what I want to do my entire life, and [I] do not agree with anyone who says, you should not do anything for Ghana because your party is not in power,"he stressed on Accra-based Kasapa fm

He rubbished claims that he expelled other people from the party for taking up government appointments adding that he has done nothing wrong as far as the rules of the party is concerned.
