The Former NPP chairman for the Klottey Korle has apologised to the party for his decision to contest as an independent candidate in the 2016 parliamentary elections of the constituency.

Valentine Nii Noi Nortey brokes ranks with the party after losing the primaries to Philip Addison.

The former party chairman initially won the primaries to contest on the ticket of the NPP at Klottey Korle. Opponent Philip Addison however challenged the outcome of the primary elections in court. The court ordered a re-run, and Mr Addison immerged winner.

Feeling cheated and with the support of a substantial number of constituents, Nii Noi rejected calls by the NPP to close ranks and support candidate Addison to win the seat. He subsequently filed to contest as an independent parliamentary candidate.

It is believed this split the votes of the NPP in the constituency. At the polls NDCs, Dr. Zanetor Rawlings won with 5070 votes, Philip Addison had 3694 and Valentino Nii Noi Nortey got 1379 votes.

Speaking on Agoo TV, Nii Noi confessed that he regretted the decision and pleaded with the party and President Akufo-Addo to forgive him.

“I want to use this opportunity to ask for forgiveness and especially my political godfather – former President J.A Kufuor. He even called me to rescind my decision [to go independent] but there were a lot of circumstances on the ground which didn’t allow that.”

“I’m really sorry to the big men I failed, I’m apologizing to these big men – Nana Addo, Kufuor, Bawumia – including Anthony Karbo, Mustapha Hamid for all my actions.”

He however refuted claims that his plea for mercy is because he wants a political appointment.
