The information Minister, Mustapha Abdul Hamid, has revealed that he joined politics because he wanted to get former President Jerry Rawlings out of office.

He told Accra-based TOP FM in an interview, that Rawlings’ brutality as a military ruler in the 1980s compelled his (Hamid’s) father to flee the country.

Hamid said his father only returned home after Rawlings left office.

He said the incident prompted him to enter politics in order to get Rawlings out of office.

“During my university years, I swam into the waters of politics because of an incident I witnessed in my childhood. I was at home one day when some soldiers who claimed were sent by former president J.J.Rawlings came to arrest my daddy.

“To me, I never understood the reason for this as a child but this incident forced my father into exile who later returned home only after the former president had left office. This made me vow to get as much education as possible to one day help me see Mr. Rawlings out of office,” he said.

During his university days the University of Cape Coast, Hamid served in New Patriotic Party (NPP) youth groups.

He was elected the general secretary to the local NUGS and later SRC President of UCC .

Mustapha Hamid later became a member of the Nana Addo’s campaign team as his spokesperson from 2007 until 2017 when he was appointed Information Minister in Akufo-Addo’s government.
