Former Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister Joseph Yammin has blamed the alleged gang rape of a teenage girl in the Ashanti Region on the Free Senior High School policy.

President Akufo Addo in September rolled out the policy, one of his party's flagship programs, which is to cater for the fees of all freshmen entering secondary schools.

The policy has been docked by sole teething challenges, including lack of space for students at the dormitories and alleged extortion by head teachers. But despite the problems, the government has indicated its resolve to ensure the smooth and successful implementation of the program, by addressing the existing gaps including the provision of more dormitories in the next phase of the policy.

But Joseph Yammin, who also served as deputy Youth and Sports Minister and NADMO officer, in a Facebook post, believes the rape, which has since gone viral with three persons arrested, is as a result of the Free SHS policy.

In a brief comment, he said: "3 of the boys are Free Senior High School students are you aware." His comment has enraged a section of the society who have called into question his level of sincerity for a policy that is to educate most people in this country and his intelligence.

The NDC, per their actions and words, intend  to scrap the policy should they come to power, claiming the implementation was poorly done. Mr Yammin is one of several officials of the NDC who have publicly demonized the program.
