One thousand five hundred and forty (1,540) police officers have been deployed to provide adequate security during the Christmas and New Year celebrations in the Eastern Region.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Simon Yaw Afeku, the Regional Commander, said their strong presence and visibility would deter people from dare committing crime.

He added that they would be on hand in the commercial areas, entertainment centres, social and religious gatherings.

He said they would also be swooping on places notorious for drugs peddling and known hideouts of criminals.

DCOP Afeku spoke of intensification of highway patrol to tackle those out there to attack and rob travellers.

He indicated that the officers and men sent to the roads and highways would not be harassing drivers or cause any inconvenience to travellers.

He urged the public to show good understanding, cooperate and support the police to keep the society safe.

They should do this by providing timely and accurate information to aid the arrest and prosecution of people, who had chosen to live outside the law.

DCOP Afeku asked the officers and men to be disciplined, maintain high standard of professionalism and avoid doing anything likely to become a scar on the image of the police service.

He advised the public to stay away from dark and lonely places.
