The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), with support from the Ghana Police Service and National Security, has carried out an enforcement exercise at the Makola Market in Accra, following complaints and social media posts about a cigarette-shaped candy on sale in the country.
In a statement on its official Facebook page, the FDA said the product, locally referred to as "cigarette toffee," had drawn public concern over its resemblance to tobacco products.
The Authority said the sale and display of such items contravene existing legislation.
Under the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851) and the Tobacco Control Regulations, 2016 (L.I. 2247), the advertisement and depiction of tobacco and related products in the media and at points of sale are prohibited.
"The exercise resulted in the seizure of these products and an arrest of a suspect. The FDA is committed to ensuring that regulated products on our markets are safe for the general public," the statement said.
