The Ashanti Regional Police Command has announced the conviction and sentencing of Abdul Munaf Lawal, 32, to 35 years imprisonment with hard labor for defrauding a complainant of $50,000.
Lawal had promised to convert the amount to Ghana Cedi equivalent but failed to fulfill his part of the agreement and absconded.
The case was reported on July 27, 2023, and after extensive investigations, Lawal was arrested on June 27, 2025, in Accra for a similar offense.
He was subsequently transferred to the Ashanti Regional Police Command for further investigations.
Lawal initially pleaded not guilty when arraigned before the Asokwa Circuit Court 1 but later changed his plea to guilty on September 3, 2025.
The prosecution informed the court of Lawal’s prior conviction and 24-month sentence for stealing, which likely influenced the court’s sentencing decision.
On September 10, 2025, the Asokwa Circuit Court, presided over by His Honour Mr. Fred Obikyere, convicted and sentenced Lawal to 35 years imprisonment with hard labor.
