The Health Insurance Service Providers Association of Ghana has called on government to increase the premium of the health insurance from 2.5% to 3.5%.

Aside this, the association is also calling for a delinking of the scheme from politics to enable it to function effectively.

The Executive Director of the Association, Frank Torblu, who made the observation at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, July 17, 2018, maintained that the scheme is likely to collapse by next year if drastic interventions are not taken to address the challenges confronting it.

The Health Insurance Scheme’s current debt stands at GHS700m with an annual funding deficit of about 450m.

Government owes service providers over GHS700m, a debt that keeps accumulating.

Mr Torblu outlined a number of interventions that the government must take into consideration to maintain the Scheme.

He also called for a delinking of the scheme from politics.

According to him, governments must stop the interference in the management of the scheme.

The scheme since its inception in the year 2000 has faced funding challenges.
