The National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), pursuant to a court directive, has disposed of 3.3 tonnes of cocaine estimated to be worth around $350 million.
The narcotics were seized from a tipper truck traveling from Cape Coast to Accra in March of this year.
The destruction exercise occurred on Wednesday, June 4, after a sequence of confirmatory examinations were carried out in the presence of the presiding trial judge, state prosecutors, representatives from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), and officials from the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC).
In addition to the cocaine, other confiscated narcotic and pharmaceutical substances seized by NACOC were also destroyed at the Bundase Military Base.
Addressing journalists during the operation, the Director General of NACOC, Brigadier General Maxwell Obuba Mantey, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to tackling drug trafficking and abuse.
“We did this today in your presence to show our commitment to end the menace. I will urge those involved to desist. We will not stand by and watch them bring in illicit drugs to destroy our future leaders.”
He further disclosed that special operations will begin next month to clamp down on drug dealers across the country.
“I hope you all can assist us so that we can bring them to the public view and name and shame them. This cannot continue in our country,” Brigadier General Mantey emphasised.
