The Accra Regional Police Command has cautioned the public about safety and security concerns ahead of the official lifting of the customary ban on drumming and noise-making, which takes place today, Thursday, June 12, at Gbese, Blohum, and Abola within the Ga State.
While the ritual firing of musketry is traditionally part of the celebration, police say there has been a growing trend in recent years where some revellers, especially sections of the youth, have turned to firing live ammunition instead of using gunpowder or blank rounds.
In a statement released by the Accra Regional Police Command, authorities said they are working in close collaboration with the Gbese Mantse and other traditional leaders to curb the practice.
“Any individual found engaging in the use of live ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” the statement warned.
The police have deployed personnel across key areas in the Ga State to ensure a peaceful and incident-free celebration. Officers also encourage members of the public to report any suspicious or unlawful activity by dialling emergency numbers 18555 or 112.
The Command extended its best wishes to the Ga people as they observe the lifting of the ban, which is a significant milestone in the cultural calendar.
“We urge all celebrants to comply with safety directives and cooperate fully with law enforcement to ensure the security of all participants,” the statement concluded.
The lifting of the ban paves the way for the Homowo Festival, one of the most important traditional events among the Ga people, marked by vibrant celebrations, drumming, and cultural displays.
