One person has died and three others sustained injuries following a collision involving a fuel tanker and a tipper truck on the Accra–Tema Motorway.

The incident occurred between Saka Saka Park and Tanink Ghana late on Monday, June 8, 2026, when a tipper truck with registration number AS 466-19 collided head-on with a fuel tanker belonging to GIG EMPIRE, registered AS 3555-24.

According to statement by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) ,an emergency call was received at approximately 11:49 p.m., prompting the immediate dispatch of the Tema Motorway Fire Crew, led by Assistant Divisional Officer I Samuel Darko. The team arrived at the scene within minutes and found the fuel tanker fully engulfed in flames.

Additional support from the Ashaiman Fire Station and the Tema Industrial Area Fire Station, together with a water tanker supplied by the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, helped sustain the firefighting operation. The blaze was brought under control at 12:56 a.m. and completely extinguished at 1:44 a.m.

Three injured victims, identified as Kwabena Agyapong, Joseph Teye Quarshie, and Aaron Kyei were transported to the Tema General Hospital before firefighters arrived at the scene.

The charred remains of a man believed to be the driver of the tipper truck were later recovered from the wreckage and handed over to the Police for preservation and further investigations.

The collision caused extensive damage to both vehicles, including severe structural destruction and the complete burnout of 26 tyres on the fuel tanker. An undetermined quantity of fuel was also lost in the fire.

The GNFS noted that its swift response prevented what could have developed into a much larger disaster, given the highly combustible nature of the tanker’s cargo.

Motorists using the Accra–Tema Motorway have been advised to exercise caution and obey directives from emergency and traffic personnel as recovery and clearance works continue.
