The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called for increased financial resource allocation to the National House of Chiefs to strengthen the regulation of the chieftaincy institution in Ghana.
Otumfuo made the appeal when the Parliamentary Select Committee on Chieftaincy, Culture and Religious Affairs paid a courtesy call on him at the Manhyia Palace to officially introduce the committee and its mandate.
The Asantehene welcomed the establishment of the committee in the 8th Parliament, describing it as an important step towards addressing issues relating to chieftaincy and religious affairs. He also extended his greetings to the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.
Speaking on recent chieftaincy disputes across the country, Otumfuo stressed the need for chiefs to rule with truth and fairness.
“Without truth there would be no understanding and peace, and that will affect development,” he stated.
Chairman of the Committee and MP for Offinso North, Dr. Fred Kyei Asamoah, acknowledged the Asantehene’s wisdom and efforts in resolving longstanding chieftaincy disputes to promote peace and development in various communities.
Dr. Asamoah also congratulated Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on his 27th anniversary on the Golden Stool.
Members of the committee later toured the Manhyia Palace Museum to learn more about the history, culture and art of the Asante Kingdom.
