Parliament’s Appointments Committee will, from today, Monday, June 16 to Wednesday, June 18, 2025, vet President John Mahama’s nominees for the Supreme Court.
The sessions will take place at 10:00 a.m. each day in Committee Rooms 1, 2, and 3 at the New Administration Block of Parliament.
The nominees are Justice Senyo Dzamefe, Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh, Justice Philip Bright Mensah, Justice Janapare Adzua Bartels-Kodwo, Justice Hafisata Amaleboba, and Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo.
All seven currently serve on the Court of Appeal bench. They were nominated by President John Dramani Mahama earlier this year under Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution, which requires the President to appoint Justices of the Supreme Court in consultation with the Council of State and with the approval of Parliament.
Justice Dzamefe previously served as Commissioner for the Commission of Inquiry into Ghana’s participation in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Justice Adjei is widely recognised for his work in judicial training and human rights law. Justice Suurbaareh brings years of experience from the bench in the Upper West Region.
Justice Mensah and Justice Bartels-Kodwo have played roles in recent decisions involving electoral and civil appeals. Justice Amaleboba, one of the few women on the current appellate bench, is known for her work in criminal justice and legal reforms. Justice Ackaah-Boafo, who joined the bench from private legal practice, has contributed to rulings on commercial and constitutional law.
If approved, the nominees will fill vacancies created by recent retirements, including those of Justice Nene Amegatcher and Justice Professor Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu.
