Peter Amewu must resign - Kwabena Donkor

A Former Power Minister, Mr. Kwabena Donkor has called for the resignation of Energy Minister John Peter Amewu.

According to him, Mr Amewu was careless in claiming fraud of the PDS concession deal at the time investigations had not been conducted by the government.

The Energy Minister, Mr Amewu stated that government will prosecute anyone found to have engaged in any fraudulent act when the suspension of the PDS concession deal was announced earlier this year. 

In an interview on Starr FM on Tuesday, October 15, 2019, Mr Donkor stated that the Energy Minister's description of the guaranteed document presented by PDS as fraud without using 'alleged' is inappropriate.

''I still stand by Amewu's resignation.He must resign! Because he is the sector Minister and there has been a mess in this whole PDS thing. Somebody must take responsibility, he as the sector Minister must take responsibility.''

''Amewu came out frontally that the PDS issue was a fraud. First of all, he should never have pronounced fraud before the government comes out to say they are investigating. He should have alleged, but if he was categorical that it is fraudulent then it means he has done all investigations''. 

''If its fraudulent and you're presiding over that fraudulent enterprise almost three months later then there must be something wrong. Either you are not having your way in government which you must resign or you were careless in claiming fraud when investigations have not done''.

 The Ministry of Information announced the suspension of the PDS in July 2019.

The decision according to the government was taken following the detection of fundamental and material breaches of PDS’ obligation in the provision of Payment Securities (Demand Guarantees) which was discovered upon “further due diligence.”

Meanwhile, an independent forensic probe into allegations of fraud following the takeover of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) by Power Distribution Service (PDS) revealed, there was no evidence to suggest any of the entities involved in the deal conspired to defraud the state.

Mr. Kwabena Donkor also argued that the country requires leadership which is patriotic and cares less about politics.

“As Ghanaians, we must be decisive and government must begin to lead and provide leadership. Leadership is not always about what Ghanaians want. Leadership must not be led by the people but unfortunately, that is what we experience in this country. It’s not always about pleasing the masses because the masses may be short sighted,''he added.
