Police in the Ashanti Region have arrested five Nigerians and a Ghanaian suspected of targeting and robbing bank customers in Kumasi.
The suspects allegedly trailed victims who had withdrawn large sums from financial institutions before breaking into their vehicles to steal the money, the regional police command said.
DCOP Emmanuel Teye Cudjoe told reporters that the syndicate had been operating for about a month, using two Toyota Highlander vehicles with fake registration plates.
“They admitted to carrying out similar thefts at several locations within Kumasi, including Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Mayanka, Asokwa, Kumasi Central Mosque, ShopRite, and Georgia Hotel area,” DCOP Teye Cudjoe said.
Among those arrested on 19 June were Russell Ekenze, a 29-year-old taxi driver; Francis Friday, 49; and Linus Agwazie, 51.
During interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed to being part of a larger criminal network. Several accomplices remain at large, including Cosmas Maduabuchukwu, who police say was injured during an attempted arrest and is now on the run.
The six suspects are in custody, with both vehicles impounded. Police say a manhunt is underway for the remaining suspects.
“Preliminary findings indicate that all members of the syndicate are Nigerian nationals, except one Ghanaian,” DCOP Cudjoe said.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has assured the public of its continued efforts to safeguard the region.
