The Ghana Police Service has arrested Dr Clemence Gyato as investigations deepen into the controversial demolition and reported takeover of the Accra Race Course at Borteyman.
The arrest by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Thursday, September 10, 2026, forms part of efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the demolition and identify those who authorised the operation.
Dr Gyato is currently in police custody assisting with investigations. His arrest, however, does not mean that any criminal liability has been established against him.
The development follows mounting pressure from stakeholders in Ghana’s horse racing community over the August 22 demolition, which resulted in the destruction of parts of the historic facility.
The police had earlier interdicted DSP Alhassan Malaika Jibril over his alleged involvement in the operation.
DSP Jibril was accused of providing security for and leading personnel involved in the demolition exercise.
According to the Accra Turf Club, about 200 armed men reportedly stormed the facility on August 22 with an excavator and nine bulldozers.
The operation allegedly resulted in the demolition of more than 100 horse stables, as well as the destruction of track railings and other infrastructure at the venue.
The incident has generated widespread concern among members of the horse racing community, with the Accra Turf Club and other stakeholders demanding answers over who sanctioned the demolition and the reported takeover of the property.
