The Ghana Police Service has arrested the alleged gang leader and one other suspect in connection with the robbery attack that led to the death of a Berekum Chelsea footballer.

According to police, the arrests were made following ongoing intelligence-led operations to track down those responsible for the incident, which shocked the football community and the nation at large.

During the operation, one of the suspects sustained injuries after an exchange of fire with police intelligence teams. The injured suspect has since been conveyed to a hospital, where he is receiving medical treatment under police guard.

The police assured the public that further details will be communicated as the investigation progresses.

Players and officials of Berekum Chelsea were attacked by suspected armed robbers on the Goaso–Bibiani road at Ahyiresu in the Ahafo Region on Sunday, April 12, 2026.

The incident occurred as the team was returning from their Matchday 29 Ghana Premier League fixture against FC Samartex 1996, where Berekum Chelsea lost by 1–0 at Dun’s Park in Samreboi.

According to police, the driver veered off the road into a bush while attempting to escape from six armed men, three of whom were wielding pump-action guns.

During the attack, one of the passengers, identified as footballer Dominic Frimpong, sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital, where he later died.

Another victim, 52-year-old George Owusu Afriyie, was robbed of GH¢4,500.

Police say two spent BB cartridges were retrieved from the scene to aid investigations.

Police say they remain committed to ensuring that all individuals involved are arrested and brought to justice.
