Ghana police not up to international standards - ACP Agorsor

The Ghana Police Service has asked government to equip policemen with resources that will enable them to better handle crime.

A statement by the head of the transformation team of the Ghana Police Service, ACP Dr. Benjamin Agorsor, explained that most of the police personnel in the country do not match up to international standards of policing.

He blamed it on the inadequacy of the required resources needed to train officers. Personal also lack some basic equipment necessary for operations on the field.

The police service has often been criticised for the conduct of some officers. They have also been cited for taking bribes and other illegal activities that have over the years tarnished the image of the service.

ACP Dr Benjamin Agorsor recounted the successes of the service on the African continent saying with the right training and equipment, they can live up to expectation

 "The same police personnel that are accused of being unprofessional in Ghana work at other places such as, the Africa Union, ECOWAS and United Nations and they turn out to be the best in those places. The difference is that in those areas, they are equipped with enough resources to help them execute their jobs better.", he noted.

He called on the government to prioritize the allocation of resources to the service to enable it effectively maintain order and deal with crime in the country.
