The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has arrested five suspects and rescued fifty-seven (57) Nigerian nationals from a human trafficking and cybercrime syndicate operating in Accra.
The suspects, identified as Joel Nosa, Collins Rotimi, Shadrack Lulu, Austin Amahuaro, and John Uloko, were apprehended at Adom Estates, Community 25, following an intelligence-led operation by the CID’s Operations Unit.
According to a statement signed by Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, Public Relations Officer of the CID, preliminary investigations revealed that the syndicate lured young men and women from Nigeria to Ghana under the guise of providing employment and educational opportunities.
Upon arrival, the victims — aged between 18 and 26 years — were reportedly coerced into engaging in online romance scams and other cybercrime activities.
During the operation, police recovered 77 assorted laptops, 38 mobile phones, two vehicles, three television sets, and other internet-enabled devices believed to have been used in committing the crimes.
All fifty-seven rescued victims are currently receiving medical attention and psychosocial support, while the suspects remain in police custody to assist with further investigations. The retrieved electronic devices have been retained for forensic examination.
The Police Service has cautioned the public, especially the youth, to remain vigilant against fraudulent offers of employment, scholarships, or travel opportunities made through social media and other unverified channels.
“The Police reiterate their unwavering commitment to combating human trafficking, cybercrime, and related offenses, and encourage anyone with credible information on such activities to report to the nearest police station,” the statement added.
