A road crash in Techiman has led to the arrest of a 48-year-old tricycle rider after police said they uncovered a large stash of suspected narcotic drugs hidden inside bags of charcoal.

The Bono East Regional Police Command identified the suspect as Robert Tannor. He was arrested on March 8, 2026 after officers recovered 397 compressed slabs of dried plant material believed to be cannabis.

Police said the suspect had been riding an unregistered Motor King tricycle, commonly called an aboboyaa, when it collided with a stationary Kia Rhino truck near Methodist Park at about 14:00 local time.

Officers who responded to the accident initially found 14 bags of charcoal on the tricycle.

But a closer search, according to police, revealed that the charcoal bags had been used to conceal the suspected drugs.

The police statement said all 397 slabs were retrieved at the scene.

Mr Tannor was said to have suffered serious injuries in the collision and was taken to Holy Family Hospital for treatment. Police said he remains under guard while investigations continue.

Meanwhile, the driver of the Kia Rhino truck is reported to have fled after the crash.

Police say efforts are underway to trace that driver and are appealing to the public for information that may assist the investigation.
