Former First Lady Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo has through her Rebecca Foundation, inaugurated a modern 100-seat capacity library at the Achimota Basic School in Accra.
This was in fulfillment of a promise made by her to the school during their 60th anniversary celebrations, after the school authorities had appealed to her for the establishment of a new and modern library.
The library, which is furnished with books, computers and internet access, sought to build the reading skills of students and open them up to online learning.
Mrs Akufo-Addo said it was her way of giving back to the school as an old pupil and that her Foundation’s believe that every child deserved a chance to learn, grow, and dream.

“That belief brings us here today-to the commissioning of a new library. But this library is more than a room with books and computers. It is a place of possibility. A place of new ideas. A place where a precious child’s future is formed.
“These computers are for you. And it is my honour to give them to you. With modern computers and internet access, you can learn anything, discover anything, and imagine everything,” she added.
Madam Edith Naa Dedei Kyeremateng, Headmistress of the School, expressed her gratitude to the former First Lady for coming to their aid and promised that they would put the facility to good use.
She added that the facility would impact the lives of the over 4,000 learners, and all others who would be privileged to study in the school in the future.
The Headmistress emphasised that the facility would open students up to the world of learning as well as build their reading and comprehension skills.
“The demand for a modern library in a school like ours had become urgent and this facility comes at the right time to boost academics and support teaching and learning,” she added.
Mr David Osei Amankwah, President of Achimota Primary Basic School Alumni, said the Alumni was proud of the former First Lady for her generosity to her alma mater.
He said the library would not only serve as a centre of learning but would inspire generations of young people to dream bigger, learn more, and reach higher.
“Your leadership continues to remind us of the power of service and the impact one dedicated individual can make. We are profoundly grateful for your support, your presence, and your belief in the future of our children,” Mr Amankwah added.
