The Vice President is encouraging Muslims to rededicate themselves to the universal human values of love, humility and empathy as they begin Ramadan on Saturday.

Dr Mahamadu Bawumia says the 30 day period of fasting demands "great sacrifice, patient endurance, and gratitude". It should inspires Muslims to strive for the common values and experiences we share as human beings.

In a Ramadan message, the Veep noted that the " rich and powerful go through the experience that the hungry and weak go through so that they develop empathy for weak and hungry and gratitude for the bountiful blessings of God"

It should therefore be a great lesson on humanity, the need to live peacefully within ourselves and the sacrifices we must make for each other's progress.

Dr Bawumia extended his "warmest felicitations to the Muslim Ummah in Ghana and around the globe on the occasion of the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan and urged Muslims to pray for our dear country Ghana".

“I wish you a blessed month. May Allah’s peace be upon us all”, he added.

The fast, one of the five pillars of Islam is used by Muslims to enhance their spiritual growth. It is compulsory for all except those who have medical conditions that doesn't allow them to undertake the fast.
