The Sanitation situation in the country seems not to be getting any better as it is now bundled up in a set of contradictory statements by Minister of Sanitation, Kofi Adda and Zoomlion Boss, Dr Joseph Siaw Agyapong.

During a sanitation forum in Accra on Friday, March 9, Mr Kofi Adda accused Zoomlion Ghana limited of being the cause of the filth that has engulfed Accra.

“Dr Agyapong [CEO of Zoomlion Ghana Limited and Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies], I’m sorry to disappoint you here…finding solid waste everywhere I feel really disappointed and if you were to ask me why this thing is so, I will put the blame squarely on Zoomlion. Zoomlion, to me, is the cause of it”, he alleged at the forum.

According to the minister, workers of Zoomlion have not been fulfilling their part in keeping the city clean by sweeping and collecting rubbish daily. He added that the private waste management company was responsible for supervising, collecting and disposing of waste but have failed to fulfil their mandate.

However, in refuting the minister's allegation Dr Agyapong stressed that his team is working as is expected of them on a daily basis saying, “We are working...as for refuse the more you generate and dispose of, people will think that you are not doing the work".

“When you look on the streets now, everywhere is clean, everywhere is neat,” he said, causing the audience to burst into laughter as they probably felt his statement did not match the reality on the ground.

"I said neat because you have not moved to other African countries. When you move to The Gambia and other places and you come back to Accra, you think that Accra is the new London.", he continued to explain.

“Sometimes do the benchmark with other countries that you have visited. I have visited some countries and I think we are doing well…even though we are not there yet, we are doing well”.
