The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) will today, Tuesday, November 7 begin issuing the new Smart driver’s license nationwide.

The new license, also a smart card, which will be launched by the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, contains a chip loaded with the owner’s bio-data and the driver’s personal information.

The new digital card will advance the acquisition of new drivers' licenses as applicants will now be able to obtain it within two to four weeks of application.

Furthermore, the digital card is expected to improve dwindling revenue from the DVLA.

The digital drivers' license is part of government’s efforts to remove the human interface from the process of issuing new licenses.

However, prior information about the introduction of the smart license system has been met with opposition from some driver unions and groups the authority suspects to be middlemen.

That notwithstanding, the DVLA is optimistic that the launch will do away with fake licenses and vehicles with fake roadworthy certificates from the system, as well as cut out middlemen, popularly known as ‘goro boys’, from the licensing regime.

It will also make use of the latest technology for secure ID printing that can be easily integrated with other systems of the DVLA.

Acquiring the new drivers' license will attract an additional Gh₵91 separate from the present charges on all other services including replacement (Gh₵64 + Gh₵91 = Gh₵155), new license (Gh₵166 +Gh₵91 = Gh₵257) and transferring a foreign license to Ghanaian one (Gh₵364 + Gh₵91 = Gh₵445).
