Some Tertiary Institutions in Ghana have in recent times been involved in demonstrations, the cause of the protest range from oppression from school authorities, failure of the school authorities to permit students who owe fees to sit for exams among others.

The protest often affects academic work and lead to the destruction of school properties.

Here are some Institutions where students have recently embarked a demonstration

KNUST Demonstration (2018)

Some male students of KNUST vehemently disputed a decision by the management of the University to convert two all-male halls into mixed halls.

The management of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology KNUST wanted University Hall, popularly known as Katanga and Unity Hall to now accommodate females.

Occupants of the two halls despite their rivalry came together to protest the decision and staged a massive demonstration to register their displeasure over the decision.

Reports suggested that the management of KNUST wanted more ladies to be accommodated into the traditional halls on campus to reduce the insecurity females off campus go through hence their decision to convert all-male halls to mixed.

Students demonstrated against the decision of management, the school was shut down when students went on a rampage and destroyed school properties.

Lecturers of KNUST also declared an indefinite strike over the dissolution of the university's Governing Council by the government.

The vice chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Prof. Obiri Danso was asked to step down by the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE)  to make way for the interim governing council to take over the administration of the university.

GIJ Demonstration (2018)

Students of the Ghana Institute of Journalism, GIJ staged a demonstration over denial by school authorities to allow them access to examination centres and prevent them from writing their examination due to their inability to register on the online system on time.

Students were also hindered on the grounds of paying only 80% of their fees and could not complete online registration.

This agitated most of them as they expressed their anger through a demonstration.

UEW Demonstration (2019)

Some students of the University of Education Winneba, UEW protested the recent dismissal of some staff of the school by the Vice Chancellor.

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has called for the resignation of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Education-Winneba(UEW) as reports indicate that he has sacked some lecturers who openly disagree with him.

The Central Regional Security Council, REGSEC, on March 14 shut down the university indefinitely following the continuous protest from students for the reinstatement of some sacked lectures which led to the destruction of properties. The Governing Council of the University of Education, UEW is to set up a committee to investigate and fish out students involved in the demonstration that led to the destruction of some properties.
