Former NDC MP for Nantong Constituency in the Northern Region, Murtala Mohammed, has asked the General Legal Council (GLC) to train more lawyers.

According to him, the country needs more lawyers therefore, the GLC should train enough lawyers and allow "the good ones to stand out''.

Murtala Mohammed noted that there have been deliberate attempts over the years to restrict the number of admissions into the law school which has shattered the dreams of many people.

Speaking on Metro TV today , Murtala Mohammed shared his personal law school entry experience and described some questions asked during the entry interviews as funny and unnecessary.

“There are attempts to protect law as a prestigious profession in Ghana so when you go for the interviews, they used to ask a question as to whether you have a lawyer in your family and how you are going to finance your education but that is none of their business; they should just produce the lawyers and the good ones will stand out.”

“A lot of peoples’ dreams have been dashed because of how the system runs but if you teach students and they fail, you the lecturer share the blame,” he said.

The former Member of Parliament made this comment during a discussion program when some law students demonstrated on Monday against the recent mass failure at the Ghana Law School entrance exams.

During the protest, the students clashed with some armed personnel from the Ghana Police Service at the Ako Adjei (Sankara) overpass, near the Jubilee House in Accra.

The Police used water cannon and tear gas to disperse the students who refused to make way for traffic.

However, the Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has described as unacceptable the brutality meted out to law students by the Ghana Police Service during their demonstration.
