Some Ghanaians have kicked against government's move to grant the GITMO 2 detainees refugee status following the expiration of their stay on 6th January 2018.

According to them, it was a bad move by the Mahama-led government to accept them in the first place amidst severe backlash from the general public and the then-in-opposition NPP.

Following the announcement by the foreign minister, Shirley Ayorkor that the former terror suspects from Guantanamo Bay have been granted refugee status and as such are the responsibility of the Ghana government, some citizens have rejected the decision and have asked the ministry to expatriate them.

They claim the presence of the two detainees poses a security threat to the nation, as one cannot truly assess their intentions or whether they have changed.

Others, however, noted that since they have already stayed in the country for a while, there shouldn't be a problem but they should be kept under a close watch to avoid any unforeseen dangers.

In a similar development, pressure group Occupy Ghana, has asked President Akufo-Addo to send back the two GITMO detainees since the New Patriotic Party (NPP) kicked against their stay in Ghana when they were in opposition.

According to a member of Occupy Ghana, Nana Sarpong Agyemang Badu, although the previous Mahama-led administration granted the two former terror suspects refugee status, the current government must expatriate them.

“The NPP spoke against it strongly in opposition and now that they’re in power, they should send the GITMO 2 back to where they came from” he stressed.
