The Students Representative Council of the Ghana School of Law has demanded the outright scrapping of the Independent Examination Board, describing the body as illegal, amorphous and ineffective, over the marking of the 2017/2018 final bar exams which led to the failure of about 81% of students.

During a press conference held by the council, Wednesday, to register their displeasure at the results, the law students accused the Independent Examination body of being solely responsible for the alleged failure of about 465 students out of a total of 560 who wrote the exams.

The SRC president of the Ghana School of law, Sammy Gyamfi who spoke on behalf of the students stated that the Independent Examination body has failed to address the very problem for which it was established.

"The Independent Examination Board has lost its credibility in the law school so much that students had to boycott certain papers. The body should be scrapped completely for our lecturers who are more competent to examine and mark our scripts, then they can be proof-marked by an external body to ensure fairness,"

"The IEB takes delight in failing students, and some members are not even qualified to mark or teach law. If this body was effective, it would not take them 9 whole months to mark less than 600 scripts", he fumed.

The SRC Vice president of the Ghana School of Law, Kumasi Campus, Nicholas Anane Agyei also revealed that the procedure of marking examination scripts since the body took its position has not been transparent and has recorded several discrepancies.

He explained that the outcome of the Bar exams which were written in May and September 2017 were unduly delayed, only to be released on Tuesday, February 20th with "pathetic results which do not reflect their true performances".

"The results of exams that were written in May and September 2017, were finally released on Tuesday, 20th February 2018. The failure rate is unprecedented in the history of the Ghana School of Law and the student body outrightly rejects those pathetic results as it does not reflect our true performances."

"We are hereby calling for the re-marking of all the scripts of failed students, which must not be done by the same Independent Examination board."

The students also appealed that the cost of remarking scripts should be reduced from GHc3,000 to GHc500 to enable students who have failed their papers to afford to have their papers remarked.

He concluded that the SRC of the Ghana School of law will present a petition to the General Legal Council concerning the Independent Examination Body on Thursday, 22nd February 2018.
