Nineteen chiefs in the northern parts of the Western Region and their inhabitants are gearing up to storm Parliament House and the seat of government, the Jubilee House, in protest against the deplorable nature of their roads.

The chiefs and their inhabitants said the then opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), before the 2016 elections, promised to construct all their roads for them should they vote for the NPP, so the chiefs should prevail on their subjects to vote for the NPP which they obliged.

They explained that, almost two years into the President Akufo-Addo-led administration; their roads have gone from bad to worse.

Spokesperson for the 19 chiefs and their inhabitants, who is also the Chief of Sefwi Kwamebikrom, Nana Kwamebi III in an interview with PrimeNewsGhana on Wednesday said, they have approach the government on several occasions on the issue but to no avail.

He said this has generated more anger from the inhabitants in the Region who are bent on voting against the NPP in 2020 election if the government do not address their grievances.

Nana Kwamebi III said the NPP government, after assumption of office in 2016, suspended all road contracts that were awarded under the previous NDC government with an excuse that, it was reviewing them.

He explained that the government has failed to review the contracts to enable various contractors to continue their work and this has caused more damages to those roads, especially, major ones in Western Region.

Nana Kwamebi III warned that if their roads are not constructed, they will not allow any political party to campaign in the Region towards the 2020 elections.

“We want him work on it else we shall not allow any campaign in 2020”.

Background

Economic activities in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality of the Western Region came to standstill on Wednesday September 26, 2018, when the chiefs and people of the Wassa Fiase Traditional Council embarked on a demonstration to protest against bad roads in the area.

The demonstrators indicated that the roads, particularly the Tarkwa-Wassa Agona portion of the Tarkoradi-Tarkwa Highway, were in a deplorable condition and do not befit the status of mining town of Tarkwa.

The protesters, therefore, blocked the road with stones and other objects and burnt tyres.

Clad in mostly red attire, the demonstrators marched through some streets in the municipality as early as 6am to register their displeasure over the delay in asphalting that portion of the road.

Traditional rulers, including Chief of Pepesa Nana Kwaku Nkrumah IV, Chief of Subri; Nana Kwabena Amponsah II, Tufohene of Dompim Pepesa; Nana Awua Okompong VIII, Apinto Gyasehen Nana Adarkwa Yiadom II were seen red and black regalia.

Some of the youth in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality were also seen chanting war songs in solidarity with the chiefs.

Scores of commuters, including school children, mine workers, market women and other residents became stranded, as many of them walked to their respective destinations.
